32 Most Badass and Coolest Mods of 2009
Friday, February 26th, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
We all love the different entertaining electronics we own, especially our computers and our favorite video game consoles, but for some odd reason, they are still just not cool enough for a few individuals, so they end up creating some crazy mods.
It seems that as good looking as the PS3 is, as cool as the Xbox 360 is made and as customized as a PC Case could be, it is not sufficient for some. In turn, these modders end up building various PS3 Mods, Xbox 360 consoles, Nintendo and PC case mods and many more variations that may seem a little crazy at first, but end up being true masterpieces.
The bottom line is, being a gamer is not just for playing PC or video games anymore, and to prove so, we have gathered an awesome collection of the absolutely 32 Best Mods that we saw in 2009 which include examples using the PS3, Xbox 360, Nintendo, PC and Macs.
If there are any that we missed, please share with us in the comments, so everyone will see as well.
Top PS3 Mods1. Steampunk PS3

This beautiful Steampunk PS3 Mod was made without taking it apart and thus voiding the warranty. All attachments were added with a vintage style that include an old radio valve, a pipe valve, a pressure gauge, assorted brass plumbing parts and some trim. The wood veneer was then aged with a few coats of varnish to give it the final touch.
In the end, the result is just phenomenal!
2. Alien Playstation 3

A scary and heavy looking Alien PS3 was created with a mass amount of epoxy and a great tribute to Giger and the Alien monster that kept us up so many years ago. The thing is, the end result of this one would be great for adults, but little kids would be afraid of picking up a controller after seeing this freaky console.
Still, you know it is something that you would easily display in your entertainment center…freaky or not!
3. PS3 Slim Laptop

Ben Heck has revisited his old video game console laptops and created a new and improved PS3 Slim Laptop, which is much lighter than before and has some better specs. This could also be seen as a wonderful way to view a home console and adapt it to the mobile world we live in today. It simply could be the best solution for die hard Playstation 3 fans to take their console on the road and have a screen and portable battery right along to play whenever they wish.
4. Microwaved PS3 Mod

The Grass Is Always Greener: 16 Home Greenifying Tips

[ Filed under Home & Garden or in the Energy & Fuel category ]

If your new year’s resolution had something to do with reducing your ecological footprint, cutting down on energy costs, or just making your home a more comfortable place to live, you’re in luck. Here are 16 resources for making your home a cleaner, greener place to live.
What’s an Eco-Footprint?

Your ecological footprint basically refers to how much of the planet’s resources you use. That includes the impact caused by driving your car, heating your home, eating your meals, buying your belongings, and everything else you do. The first step to reducing your ecological footprint is figuring out just what it is. Treehugger’s Green Basics article on Defining, Calculating and Reducing Your Environmental Footprint is a good place to start.
Go Green and Save Money

One of the benefits of going greener around the home is that you’ll often significantly cut down on utility costs. From heating and cooling tips to reducing electricity and water costs, these 10 Cost-Saving Green Tips For the Home will please both the environmentally-conscious and the wallet-conscious. Of course, one of the simplest and most readily available solutions for adding a bit of green to your house is the venerable CFL bulb. Find out everything you need to know here with Treehugger’s guide to CFL bulbs.
Reduce Heating and Cooling Costs

Heating and cooling a home is expensive – and unless you’re lucky enough to live in a very temperate location, you’ll have to do at least one of those at some point in the year. Aside from insulating your home (which is in itself a fantastic way to minimize heating costs), here are projects to make every room in your home more energy-efficient. Whether you decide to DIY or BUY, your energy bills will be a lot less painful. And, although summer is only a distant dream for the northern hemisphere at the moment, here are 10 low-tech ways to cut down on cooling costs in the warmer months. But for the simplest of the simple tips, just replacing your HVAC filters can save you money on heating and cooling your home.
Monitor Your Energy Usage

There are a ton of dandy little gadgets that will tell you just how much energy your home is consuming. The Home Joule does that, plus it tells you when your energy bill will spike based on weather and time-of-day costs. Keeping an eye on the device’s face helps you determine when you should try to cut back on discretionary energy consumption: green means electricity costs are low, yellow means mid-range, and red means they’re high.
Put Your Garbage to Good Use

Besides recycling, which pretty much everyone agrees we should all be doing, there’s another way to make the most of your waste: composting. According to the EPA, yard trimmings and organic household waste make up 26% of America’s solid waste. Learn how to compost your household organic waste and you’ll not only be keeping a significant amount of waste out of the system; you’ll also be giving yourself a great foundation for growing your own food. A garden provides natural exercise and cuts down on your grocery bills; what more could you ask for? Take it a step further and add worms, and there you have vermicomposting and some incredibly rich gardening material.
Build Some Green In

When you’re remodeling or building a new home, it’s the perfect chance to build some green features right into the house. Most of us won’t be able to afford GE’s new “green gizmo” home, but when you’re remodeling or just improving your home, you can almost certainly fit in some green materials.

Twelve Twisted Doorknobs To Turn
Saturday, February 20th, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Ready to hob nob with some high class doorknobs? These dozen daring twists on a traditionally utilitarian theme will unlock your perceptions of what room decor could and should be.
The First Modern Doorknob
(images via: eHow and Rest and Restlessness)
Doorknobs… a most common, everyday appurtenance that’s seen little or no improvement since the age of the ancient Egyptians? Wrong! It wasn’t until December 10th of the year 1878 (AD, not BC) that the US Patent Office approved a patent for the first practical “door holding device”: the complete doorknob as we know it today. Perhaps even more surprising (considering the era) is that the doorknob patent was awarded to an African-American named Osbourn Dorsey. Very little is known about Dorsey other than he had a certain aptitude for door-related devices – he’s also credited with inventing the doorstop.
Molecular Doorknob Gets A Round
(images via: Sherle Wagner and Outblush)
Sherle Wagner’s Molecular Doorknob was a 2005 design exercise in polished nickel plating that features a half-dozen spherical “atoms” in close association, much like the shape of an actual molecule made by combining individual atoms. The Molecular Doorknob makes one think… about which sphere the user should turn to open the door.

Rapping On The Door? Ice Cube Doorknobs

There’s not much that can be said about these Ice Cube Doorknobs, other than they look mighty cool with their squared-off design complemented by carved grass hardware. It’s not known for certain whether rapper/actor (raptor?) Ice Cube has these, but really, who’s going to walk up and ask him about his doorknobs?

Out Of The Blue Design Studio will knock your socks off with literally dozens of spectacularly beautiful doorknobs crafted with care from exquisite art glass. The available designs range from natural images of leaves, flowers and even a globe, to more abstract themes that serve to focus your attention – and likely the sun’s rays on a bright clear day. These cooler than cool doorknobs look so good you’ll be tempted to forbid people from touching them for fear of leaving fingerprints.

16 Anti-Theft Gadgets and Designs to Deter Thieves
Thursday, January 28th, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
We all own many different cool gadgets and items that are important to us either for the utility they provide or perhaps because of an intimate or personal reason. Whatever the reason is, we really hate it when someone comes and touches our personal belongings and worst yet..steals them.
In order to avoid such mishaps and unfortunate events, we have gathered here a great collection of different Anti Theft Gadgets and Bizarre Designs that are meant to help individuals make their devices and belongings less attractive, appealing or desired to a normal bystander. Moreover, there are a few security gadgets and projects that may also interest the more techy of you, who may be looking for some new gizmos to own or security diy to built.
The following aren’t guaranteed to deter thieves or work colleagues from getting at your gadgets but are meant as an additional things to make them think a second time before getting at your personal stuff.
1. Anti Theft Lunch Bags

These amazing sandwich bags are a sure way to keep any co-workers from getting into your lunch.
As if any introduction is needed, some individuals at work are rude enough to touch, get into or even treat themselves to your lunch. I am not sure what drives these folks into allowing themselves to eat someone else’s food without permission, but unfortunately these few do actually exist.
In order to battle them when you cannot install a video camera inside the refrigerator, these Anti Theft Bags could really do the trick. The Sandwich bags contain green splotch marks on both sides of the bag, so when a sandwich is packed in there, it looks as if it is old and rotten.
The design itself is amazing, but it does have a few possible downfalls such as a different person throwing your lunch in the garbage because of the color, or the coworker decides to take an additional step and investigate your lunch.

For a simple and easily accessible place to store your ’stash’, this cool Secret Electric Wall Socket compartment provides a great solution.

Gargoyles: From Gothic Garglers to Grotesque Guardians
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

If the words “gargle” and “gargoyle” sound similar that’s no coincidence, but from their original function as decorative downspouts gargoyles have evolved into whimsically sculptured, cathedral dwelling creatures who often look evil but whose purpose is to do good.

Reminiscent of classically inspired lion-headed faucets, the ancient gargoyles above display the openings through which rainwater poured. The purpose of the heads was purely practical at first: keep water that fell onto a building’s roof from coursing down its sides and undermining the foundations. The gargoyles above hail (clockwise from above left) from Ai Khanoum in Afghanistan, ancient Greece and Axum in Ethiopia.

They may have helped the buildings upon which they were mounted but pity the poor townspeople for whom every rainy day became a walk in the waterpark. The majestic, lion-head gargoyle above once directed rainwater from a corner of an ancient Greek temple’s roof.

In the time of the Roman Empire gargoyles began to be built with lead pipes inside to channel water without eroding the stone. It was an effective innovation, as can be attested to by the many gargoyles still performing their functions atop Roman temples 2,000 years or more after they were built.

Like so many innovations pioneered or perfected by the Romans, gargoyles are popularly used today to give a distinctive look to fountains and other water sculptures that don’t need rain to let it shine.

Sometimes gargoyles take on unusual forms that seem out of place with their usual locations – on places of worship. Take the pair of mooning gargoyles above from Germany (top) and England. Some say that these types of gargoyles were “aimed” at competing buildings or in the case of the German one, a government office across the street.

Controller Like Calculator Makes Math Fun
Monday, January 25th, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

One of the first digital machines available to man was not some video game or a sports watch, but the good ol’ calculator. Agreed, we’ve had our share of far more interesting cool gadgets over the years, but this new X-cool calculator, which is shaped like a game controller, takes us down memory lane when there were no other cool gadgets to boast of.
I have had my share of struggle with math lessons in this life, and I wish I had this calculator on me back in school. Not that it would make me better at math, but the class wouldn’t be that boring. If algebra was an orc and trigonometry was a goblin, then one could kick some serious butt in school with the X-cool calculator. Accountants in offices could animate their world where submitting reports on time to their superiors would be equivalent to fighting the boss mode in an RPG.
Although, we might want to keep the excitement under some kind of control because this calculator, cool as it is, does not come with a guarantee that you wouldn’t be thrown out of class if you keep screaming “Die Orc, Die!” during every math problem that comes your way. Same goes for office goers.
I also feel it is a bit sad that a calculator, a favorite from the yesteryears, had to morph itself into the guise of a game controller to remind us of its past glory. Friends, let us not forget where it all started.
