Star Trek Federation Computer Now Controls Your Living Room Lighting
Friday, February 26th, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
Well it can’t be put more simply that groping around in the darkness for a light switch is not a pleasant experience and can sometimes really hurt, but this Star Trek styled, voice activated light switch and dimmer promises to eliminate this problem all together. Because unlike the switches of old you don’t even have to touch the switch, just mumble a few commands to the federation computer and voila! there shall be light.

The Star Trek dimmer gives the user complete control of the lighting in a room by offering three levels of light adjustment that can all be activated by voice command. But the icing on the cake would definitely be that the switch cum dimmer confirms your commands in the voice of Majel Barret- Roddenberry, the original voice of the federation computer; thus giving you a surreal feeling of being aboard the Starship Enterprise. Setting it up is also very easy and the module will even guide you through the setup process.
But if you really want to get into the Star Trek mind-frame try sitting down in Captain Kirk’s chair and then command the dimmer. As for the price $69.99 seams to be a pretty fair deal for the product being offered, and is a must buy for any star trek fan.

Cool RCX4 Star Stryker Remote Control Gadget
Monday, February 22nd, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

While CES 2010 shows some of the greatest and most innovative gadgets and technology, there are still cool toys that are more than worthy of a mention, such as this cool RC Gadget called the RCX Star Stryker.

Built to resemble a Luke Skywalker’s Star Fighter from Star Wars, this amazing RC Gadget put Remote Control Helicopters to shame. It has tremendous possibilities that combined with precision and control, grant a truly remarkable toy that flies, hovers and maneuvers like a true spacecraft.

We were fortunate enough to get a real video demonstration (seen above) from the maker, Patrick Le, who both explains the possibilities with the RCX4 Star Stryker and also demonstrates it with the sideways hovering, forward/backwards maneuvers, all around flying and of course the beautiful landing.

Unfortunately, the batteries last for only 10 minutes but also take only 10 minutes to recharge, so with a spare battery, you could easily be flying again while the first battery charges.

The RC star Stryker comes with a metal case that houses the entire spacecraft, remote control, separate wings, etc in a safe spot in foam that is cut for the specific gadget itself.
It may not be a true Star Wars Star Fighter replica, but with its features, abilities and looks…it really doesn’t matter, for it is an awesome Remote control gadget that is a touch of heaven. Just take a look at the video and be amazed yourself.

Very Alternative: 5 Unusual Alternative Energy Sources
Friday, February 19th, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
[ See more under News & Politics or in the Energy & Fuel category ]

Solar and wind energy seem to get most of the attention from alternative-energy supporters, but there are plenty of other alternative fuel sources being explored. Some of them are entirely possible, some of them are dangerous or impractical, and some are downright silly. These five unusual alternative fuel sources are just a few of the possibilities currently in development.
Tornadoes

(image via: Iwa519)
Tornadoes are usually seen as very destructive forces, but one Canadian engineer believes that we can one day harness the power of the tornado to power entire cities. Louis Michaud believes that by pumping warm, humid air into his Atmospheric Vortex Engine (AVE), a chamber 200 meters wide with 100 meter tall walls, he can create an artificial tornado. The rotation of the tornado would then power wind turbines at the chamber inlets, creating enough electricity to power a small town. Michaud proposes using waste heat from power plants since they typically reject more than half of the heat they generate. He admits that the tornado would probably cause some extra precipitation in the surrounding area, but says that the whole setup would be inherently safe.
Dead Bodies

(image via: left-hand)
At least one UK crematorium is using the gases released from the cremation process to warm the mourners in attendance. While it may seem morbid, it’s actually an eco-friendly use of an energy source that is currently wasted. A lot of talk has been flying around about environmentally friendly burials, so why not extend that environmental consideration to cremations as well? The energy inherent in cremated bodies is already being captured in a way, since it has to pass through filters to remove the mercury in the deceased’s fillings. The only change would be pumping that energy into the building’s heating system rather than allowing it to escape.
Dancing Bodies
When was the last time you made the world a better place by clubbing all night? Sustainable Dance Club was formed in the Netherlands with the idea that dancing bodies could create enough kinetic energy to actually power a building. Club WATT in Rotterdam was the first to install the Sustainable Dance Floor, but SDC is looking forward to taking their technology all over the world to other clubs, festivals, and wherever there are people willing to dance for the good of the Earth. They hope to spread the knowledge that living a greener lifestyle isn’t all about sacrificing the things you love.
Chocolate

This racing car isn’t remarkable only because of how it’s fueled – it’s also made entirely from sustainable materials. The body is made from recycled carbon fiber, recycled resin and woven flax, the steering wheel is made of carrot pulp, and it’s lubricated with plant oils. The car is fueled solely with biofuel made from a mixture of chocolate and animal oils. Biofuel has been around for a long time, but it hasn’t been seriously considered as a long-term fuel source until the last decade or so. While it may not be ready to power entire cities just yet, biofuel is currently being used in plenty of vehicles, either as an additive or as a sole source of fuel.
Ancient Mudstones

(image via: Andreas-photography)
300 million-year-old mudstones could one day reduce our dependence on conventionally-obtained fossil fuels, according to researchers at the University of Leicester. Shale gas can be found in the stones, much as it’s been found in sandstone for many years. But mudstone yields up to four times as much gas as sandstone. However, extracting the gas from the stones could be challenging since the stones aren’t consistent in their gas retention.

Language of Love: Unique Animal Mating Habits

The classic “boy meets girl” love story is hardly the invention of humans. Just ask our friends in the animal kingdom, who have certainly perfected the art of romance. From the love songs of the Mexican free-tailed bat to the dangerous, seductive dance of redback spiders, the language of love rings loud and clear in the animal world, with the end goal of winning her affection clear but the means not always so.
Humpback Whales: Crooning for Your Love

(Image via: RD)
Apparently, crooning is not just reserved to the Frank Sinatras of the world but is fair game in the animal kingdom for attracting the attention of the fairer sex. Male humpback whales apparently sing, that is bellow noises that sound like hums, whups and chirps, to seduce females and claim their territory. Especially interesting is the recent finding that these male whales will change their tunes in response to other whale songs, as if theyre trying to one up each other. Humpback competition is not just limited to singing; when interested in a female, three to eight males will surround the object of affection and fight for the closest positioning to the girl of their dreams.
Giant Pandas: Secret Love Letters

(Images via: My Net Bizz, Flickr, Japan Probe)
Humpback whales are not the only animals with their own language of love. According to recent research, male giant pandas blurt out a variety of sounds (such as barks, moans, honks, growls, roars and squeals) when looking for a partner during mating season. One particularly prevalent sound (the bleat) was recently decoded by researchers as a cue to the female about the size of the male giant panda. Female giant pandas also respond with their own sounds (chirps, snorts and chomps) that convey information about their ages. Also cool were the findings that the male pandas prefer older females to mate with based on their experience, and that boy and girl giant pandas have distinctive masculine and feminine voices.
