Stars of wonder: Top 23 Hubble Discoveries
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
[ Filed under News & Politics or in the History & Trivia category ]
Once upon a time, there was a star made famous by Christian tradition. The Star of Bethlehem, also called the Christmas Star has no concrete evidence to this date of an astronomical object. Nowadays we have NASA and the Hubble to record great astronomy and bring us breathtaking photos from space. Here are 23 famous Hubble discoveries and NASA heavy hitters.
Hubble Ultra Deep Field

Hubble Ultra Deep Field peers deeper into space and farther back in time than any other before it. It shows around a billion years after the big bang. The universe was filled with dwarf galaxies but no formed galaxies like the Milky Way. Stare at this until you feel small and are in wonder of the mighty universe, and then peace on Earth doesn’t seem quite such an impossible feat.
SN 1006 Ribbon of Gas

More than 1,000 years ago a supernova exploded and left behind this ribbon of gas. In about AD 1006, astronomers from Europe, the Far East and Africa saw the light of the supernova. It is believed to be the brightest star ever seen by humans, even brighter than Venus. It was visible even during the day and stayed visible to the naked eye for at least two and half years. It’s not called SN 1006. If something like this was the cause of the Bethlehem star, there is no yet valid scientific proof of it.
Space NASA

The top image is of the Whirlpool, also known as spiral galaxy M51. Young stars live inside the curving spiral arms while older stars reside in its yellowish core. On the bottom is the Sombrero galaxy or M104. The galaxy is tilted on its side and can been seen through small telescopes at the southern edge of the Virgo cluster. It is 50,000 light-years across and is located 28 million light-years from Earth. This massive object is equivalent to 800 billion suns.

The Hubble peered into the Sagittarius Star Cloud, a narrow, dust-free region, providing this image of some of the oldest inhabitants of our galaxy. On the right, a dense swarm of stars and dust near the nucleus of spiral galaxy NGC 300 brought to us up close and personal by the Hubble even if the galaxy is 7 million light-years from Earth. On the bottom left, two clusters form MACS J0025 which is about a whopping quadrillion times the mass of the Sun. The Hubble was used map the (blue) dark matter, while the Chandra x-rayed hot (pink) gas.
Eagle Nebula

Perhaps the most well-known image the Hubble has taken is the Eagle Nebula. This picture was taken on April 1995. The color image is constructed from three separate images taken in the light of emission from different types of atoms. Red shows emission from singly-ionized sulfur atoms. Green shows emission from hydrogen. Blue shows light emitted by doubly- ionized oxygen atoms. Eagle Nebula shows a nearby star-forming region 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Serpens.
Light Echo

This sequence of pictures was captured by the Hubble to demonstrate the echoing of light through space and reflecting off surrounding shells of dust to reveal a bull’s-eye. This shows the changes in the stellar dust as different parts are illuminated in an effect called ‘light echo.’ From the sequential images, the nebula appears to expand from 4 to 7 light-years and creates an illusion that the dust is expanding into space faster than the speed of light.

Tea Time, Modenn FLO Review
Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
Love me a cup of homemade tea, don’t you? I haven’t heard much about this Canadian brand Modenn but one of my favorite design studios (OHM) designed it and were kind enough to send me one for review. Hands down it trumps any generic tea set and it was a good excuse to put aside my Sorapot (which isn’t a tea set) and steep the traditional way. Hit the jump and come join me. I gots me a story to tell.
Mmm nice hot freshly made tea. Nothing better than that, well maybe except for freshly made hot chocolate but that’s besides the point. The Modenn FLO Tea Set consists of a pot, creamer, and sugar pot. It’s strikingly modern. Every curve looks as if the smoothest hands guided each arch into place. Everything is beautifully bezeled, from the lid to the handle. I believe the set is made from white ceramic because even the blackest of teas didn’t stain it – a problem I’ve had with other white tea sets.
Okay but my LOVE LOVE LOVE feature is the spout. Why? I wish I captured this on video but it’s elegantly formed to give you one continuous stream of liquid, sort of in a high arch. Basically the set not only looks good but makes you look good. I totally looked so PRO moving the stream from cup to cup and without spillage. As soon as you set the pot down, the stream stops. No dribbling or running down the neck.
Mmm this tea still tastes good. Epiphany! I could use this for hot chocolate too! Stay turned kids as I try and figure out where you can purchase one. This would be a fantastic holiday gift. HINT HINT.
What we loved:
Beautiful organic minimalist designHigh quality white ceramic doesn’t stain or crackNicely weighted when pouringPrice point is on the money ($80)
What could be improved:
Include a spoonInclude a couple tea cups

Portrait Photography: 12 Creative Portraiture Photographers
Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Ephemeral, always changing, portraits are all about capturing a person or persons in a precise moment of time. Portraits were once only about facial expressions, but creative photographers look for much more than that now such as personality or mood. A picture may be worth a thousand words, but pictures can lie. They can be staged. Masters of portrait photography build their picture down to the tiniest detail to relay that moment of time to viewers. Here are 13 creative portraits and 12 portraiture photographers.
Firestarter by David Roth

Photographer David Roth captured this image. His focus was on the little girl’s face, her expression, and her eyes tell a story. He did not, however, get stuck in the middle of the frame. His subject is not centered. The unfocused background shouts important details. In this case, he labeled the picture Firestarter. She’s just an innocent bystander. Or is she?
Traditional VS Non-traditional
Weddings and engagements are an important time to record the moment. Some photographers like from V.I.P. use more traditional means to capture what the subject wants remembered, the dress, the moment, the play of light. In creative portraits, the photographer can think out of the box. If a couple particularlys a certain setting like the woods, then photographers from Luster Studios record the moment there. Portraits can be as varied as the people in the pictures.
Creative Portrait

Some portraits are stunning due to the creative photographer changing the the angle of attack and the setting for a shot. This unique portrait of a Mexican wedding by Sol Tamargo clearly considers what the photograph says. The wedding couple has an affinity for doing things differently and a great love for the water. What the photo says is even more important than the picture itself.
Boudoir Photos — Annie Leibowitz

Annie Leibowitz is famous for her creative portraits which show a close collaboration between her subjects and her ability to capture the moment. In this case, Johnny Depp and his wife will forever have this image of intimacy recorded. The visual interest here is less on the background settings than the subjects, however the sparse background speaks volumes in this scene. Leibowitz’s claim to fame comes about by her selecting subjects to photograph who “Open their hearts and souls and lives to you.”
Valley of Regret

When an image so perfectly captures an emotion, this is great creative photography. In this case, Leah Johnston uses her photos as an illustration to her poetic verse. This portrait is titled Valley of Regret. She has assembled a collection of her uniquely stirring photographs and touching poems on Flickr.

Take In The Whole 180 Degree View
Monday, September 28th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
Adding a new dimension to photography is the Intel Capture180 Camera. Taking a tangent from the mega-pixel war, and data storage issues, the Capture180 Camera brings in the news with its Virtual Reality imaging proposal. It uses a 180 degree fish-eye lens to capture 180 degree hemisphere and stores the information as meta-data within each shot, allowing the camera’s viewfinder, a digital picture frame, or your computer screen to come alive with the images.
The 180 degree fish-eye lens captures quite a wide view of the shot.
The warped photos are unwrapped in-camera into a hemisphere of image, and everything outside of the traditional picture frame is stored as meta-data.When viewing photos, position sensors allow the camera’s viewfinder to act as a window into a still moment in time.If it’s a photo of fireworks, you can point the camera over to the left see the faces of the people sitting next to you- it’s like the camera never left the place. The extra meta-data also means that photos can be recomposed long after they’ve been shot.Photos can be cropped down or up, and this pretty much eliminates the need for the user to point. The whole scene is captured with each shot, and one or multiple photos can be composed from the scene later.
