TravSAFE Luggage Aint Nothin to Mess With
Monday, February 22nd, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
Alert the airplane police! They’re about to have a whole lot of confused airport burglars on their hands. This project by Shing Lo’s got the “Design Out Crime” tagline attached to it. Why? Because it’s a one-luggage thief deterrent, that’s why. It’s got a honeycomb interior. Locks. A passive alarm system. An active alarm system (that you can set off.)
And it looks so fashionable!
Active alarm system: should the thief who wants your bag get caught trying to rip the bag from your hands, just pull the trigger, breaking it off, and boom! Sparks shoot off and smoke pours from the package. Not only that, an audio alarm sounds loudly too! This thievery will not be private.
Passive alarm system: should the thief take your bag while you’re foolishly forgetting you even had it, have no fear! Unless the thief is lazy and decides to drag it across the floor that is, because this alarm activates when it senses it’s a certain distance away from the floor. This time no smoke though, only loud noises.
All this and a fabulously reinforced interior, honeycomb style.

Compass, Show Me The Light
Wednesday, January 27th, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
Stop right there! Why make a compass digital? Couldn’t I just find north using a real-deal analog compass? Why yes! But this compass right here doesn’t tell you north, south, east, and west, it tells you the direction you want to go! No more maps for you. No more reliance on the magnets of the world! No more even relying on the electricity of the world, this little puck right here has a dynamo for hand charging. How about that?
I know we’ve got some dynamo users out there, would you say this is really “dynamic?”
How do you say, “dynamotastic?”
This device is called the “Kompis,” and for lack of a more nutshelled way to say it: it’s a GPS mapmaker without the annoying lady voice (or Snoop Dogg voice) or visuals. It just works on lights. It does have some audio bits for the interface, but other than that: just a ring around the posy.
Configure either by programming locations in with your computer through a USB cable, or walk around and hit the “remember” button whenever you get to a place you’d like to sometime get back to. The light you see around that ring points in the general direction of your wanted location. It goes from blue to red in a gradient of colors showing how close or far you are from your desired location.
Easy to use, simple controls, simple look.
Fun for explorers!

Project Bee Helps, Doesn’t Sting
Tuesday, January 26th, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
Project Bee is a talking, interactive GPS enabled navigation assistant intended for the visually impaired but there’s no reason why sighted people couldn’t benefit from it either. Lack of independent mobility and access to new emerging technologies has kept the visually impaired market behind but with Project Bee, designer Tao Lin hopes things will change – all via a very stylish bracelet.
The system relies on voice commands, audio and haptic feedback. The video explains it better but be prepared for the long winded intro but what instantly jumps out at me is this device doesn’t look like a “helper.” It looks like something anybody with a tech minded fetish would love and that’s a win-win assuming the whole thing works.

Amazing Audio: 40 Sexy Speakers & Sweet System Designs
Friday, January 22nd, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Home speakers were once ugly, boxy things that you hid away from sight because they did nothing for your décor. But smart designers have been working to make the home audio speaker an attractive part of whatever room it’s in, and some of their designs are positively unbelievable.
The Grand Enigma

(image via: Dvice)
The Grand Enigma from Kharma may just look like a wall of speakers, but they’re a little more than that. Like, a million dollars more than that. Yes, the above setup is the world’s most expensive set of speakers, and there’s only one of its kind. You’d have to be a truly hard-core audiophile to drop a million bucks on a sound system.
Soundshelf

(images via: Technabob)
When you have a small space to work with, single-functionality items just won’t do. Everything in a small space should do at least double duty to maximize the area. These speakers/bookshelves do that in the most delightful way, by combining music, books and sweet design (three of our favorite things) while saving floor space. Created by Polish designers Witek Stefaniak and Anielka Zdanowicz, these awesome speakers are sadly only a concept for now.
Bandai Diorama Speaker

If your goal is to actually draw attention to your speakers rather than hide them, you couldn’t find a more perfect product. This limited-edition speaker from Bandai (of Power Rangers fame) features a very noticeable plastic model of 1955 Ginza on top. For about $2230, this is obviously the best choice for classy ladies and gentlemen everywhere.
Equalizer Speaker

(image via: I New Idea)
Let us go on record as saying that if these speakers ever became commercially available, we would walk barefoot over hot coals to get one. The familiar equalizer design lets you adjust the individual audio levels to your personal preference, and in a fun tactile way. Each slider is a speaker, lending a fantastic aesthetic quality to an otherwise sort of mundane activity.
Zimku Floor Speakers by Parrot

(image via: Wired)
Parrot is already known for their wireless headphones, but recently they branched out and joined forces with designer Philippe Starck to come up with these sophisticated-looking tower speakers. They are designed to be used in pairs and connect to each other wirelessly via Bluetooth. But even better is their wi-fi capability, making them able to stream music from your computer or cell phone. Or if you’d prefer, pop that iPhone or iPod onto the integrated dock. Their $1500 price tag suggests that you might want to be pretty serious about your music before lusting after the Zimku speakers.

Ceramic Speakers, Careful Now
Thursday, November 12th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off
Our favorite teapot maker Joey Roth is at it again. His Ceramic Speakers made the internet rounds months ago but I had to point out how there’s still nothing like it on the market and if he is to be believed – audiophiles and design snobs alike will both be appeased.
The Ceramic Speakers are made from porcelain, cork, and Baltic birch. Each material is minimally finished, left to add its natural beauty to the design. The included amplifier is made from stainless steel sheet metal, with a cast iron base and paulownia volume slider. Aside from the electronic components, plastic is rarely used.
Typical speakers are designed to play even the most compressed or poorly recorded track. They gloss over the details that give high-resolution music its depth. The Ceramic Speakers custom-made drivers, porcelain and cork enclosures, and Tripath amplifier reveal every nuance. They will show the difference between lossless and mp3 files, and will unlock vinyls richness.
Binding posts, 1/8 jacks, and banana plugs have been perfected through years of electronic design. It would be arrogant to replace these simple, effective standards with proprietary connectors. Due to their open design, the Ceramic Speakers work with nearly all high-quality components. The terminals also have a utilitarian beauty that the design emphasizes rather than hides.
If you like it then you shoulda put ring on it a.k.a Joey is taking pre-orders now. $495 plus free shipping. Mr. Roth, are you going to send us one?

Google to Launch New Music Service
Thursday, November 5th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Some of the other companies which are included are Google and MySpace, and thus 4 companies would be involved in this new initiative where the new music service would allow browsers to get information about a track and also the option to listen to a 30 second intro of the same made possible by LaLa or iLike.

There could also be YouTube results appearing for the same track and thus combine not just information and audio for the particular song in the search result, but also videos related to the particular track. The new service would be integrated full time in Google search and would totally change the way people search for music Online from October 28.

It may also help in curbing illegal downloads as people would be forced to “buy the song” through Online music companies to listen to the song completely, though it is too early to comment on that. I am also wondering if this service would work on Google Android OS enabled phones and systems.
