Crowdsourcing the City: Amazing 3D User-Submitted Pic Modeling

Crowdsourcing doesn’t seem to be losing any steam, and with good reason: asking the public to perform tasks often results in unique, creative and inspired ideas. Sometimes, companies who use crowdsourcing can save a large amount of money by getting a community of workers to contribute to their task. But an interesting new trend in public-sector crowdsourcing seems to be popping up: using the public to shape the city.

The most compelling form of using citizens to shape cities is compiling tourist snapshots to create 3D models of well-photographed places. Searching Flickr for the tag “Rome” returns over two million photographs. Researchers at the University of Washington’s GRAIL lab decided to compile those photographs into a 3D image, and do it all in one day.

They developed software to download all images with a certain tag, then match them up based on common points to create a large three-dimensional picture. The resulting software can process massive amounts of information in a short amount of time; although the pictures themselves aren’t yet perfect, the team is working on developing it to the point that it fills out each picture more completely. Besides Rome, they’ve built models of parts of Venice and Dubrovnik, Croatia.

A less literal, but more tangible, way for crowdsourcing to shape cities is known as “open source urbanism.” This can refer to either opening up software and web applications to individuals who want to make the city an easier and more transparent place to live, or to the low-tech method of getting citizens much more involved in their communities.

The best recent example of the former is the NYC BigApps contest; Mayor Bloomberg asked the public to come up with software applications to to make the city “more transparent, accessible, and accountable.” Using public data produced by city agencies, developers have submitted entries that will make it easier for residents and visitors to find tourist information as well as vital statistics – and everything in between.

Is crowdsourcing the future of urbanism? Will urban planning one day be left to those who will actually be walking and driving the streets of the cities? With government agencies routinely too bogged down to revamp outdated systems, it seems only logical that the people who benefit from those systems should be able to help shape them.

Stolmen bike stand mod for carpet flooring

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

This smart idea from Andrew lets you build the Stolmen bike stand on carpet flooring. Sturdy enough to hold two bikes in mid air.
“This Ikea-hack is mainly an extension of a design already featured, that adapts said design to more applications. The Stolmen Bike Stand seemed like such a great idea, I wanted to make a similar one for my apartment. The basic design is the same, with one significant change: an adapter to use the Stolmen post on carpet.
Image

Normally, the Stolmen posts are only good for wood floors, as the post is held by compression between the floor and ceiling. Using the standard base on carpet, the carpet compresses over time causing the pole to become loose and eventually fall (a well documented issue). The version I made eliminates this problem by replacing the bottom connection with a different design.
Items used:
 - 4″ diameter, 1″ thick aluminum round (from Alro metals supply store)
 - “Speaker Cabinet 3/8″ Toe Spike Set” from PartsExpress (p/n 240-725)
Instructions:
1. Drill a 1/2 inch diameter hole, 1/2″ deep, into the center of one side of the aluminum round.
2. On the other side of the aluminum round, drill and tap four holes for 1/4-20 thread pattern
3. Install speaker spikes in threaded holes.
4. Use base instead of standard Stolmen base, placing the extendable metal nob from the post into the 1/2″ diameter hole.
This design works because, as you tighten the post (using standard Ikea assembly methods), the speaker spikes drive through the carpet base and into the wood subfloor. This gives them a solid, non-giving, surface and allows the pole to be tightened properly and not fall over.”

Photoshop on iPhone: How Cool Is It Really?

Saturday, October 17th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

While we had recently spoken about how Adobe and Apple agreed to let Flash Content be available on the iPhone, you could now access Photoshop too and you must have learned this by now already. While Photoshop Mobile for iPhone and iPod Touch was released a few days ago, many users have felt that the striped version of Photoshop isn’t as great as the real deal.

One could certainly crop images, add minor effects, rotate, flip, and also add saturation and tint to your images among the other effects. You must have also learned by now that you would get a free online storage of 2GB with the Photoshop Mobile app, which can be downloaded for free in U.S. and Canada. However, after using the app for a couple of days, users have begun to feel the lack of tools that one could expect in other mobile image editing tools.

You may perhaps be able to edit a picture better on a Nokia N series phone than on an iPhone in spite of Photoshop Mobile being made available. However an equal number of people have also liked the idea of finally being able to edit images at least in certain aspects. One could heave a sigh of relief that we can at last edit images and post them online or share with friends right from the iPhone, and of course, it was high time this happened!

How To Stalk Your Girlfriend with the iPhone: Bizarre iPhone Apps

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

We just mentioned how many different possibilities are provided with the iPhone with the Cocaine Scale iPhone Disguise, but here is a video that shows another view as in How To Stalk Your Girlfriend with available iPhone apps.

This iPhone video was probably made to be funny, but I am certain some women would not really find it as hilarious. First of all, it shows different applications available, and how an obsessed boyfriend could use them to keep tabs on his girlfriend, ex girlfriend or anyone practically. Secondly, it really presents the simplicity of using such apps. And thirdly…well, the first two are enough.

Now I know that the iPhone is not made for any criminal activities, but I guess the obsessed kind do not see Technology, development and innovation as any wall to block their way from reaching their obsessive goal.

If you would rather see some more innocent iPhone creations, then check out the iPhone Soap Bar or the funny iPhone 3G Chart as it is being compared to a rock.

CS5 Flash iPhone Applications Can Finally Be Developed for the iPhone

Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

iPhone might be the most appealing and appreciated piece of gadget in recent times but most people have complained about the Smartphones inability to support Adobe Flash. Flash Player had been banned from Apple iPhone, as Steve Jobs claimed that Flash reduces the performance of the chic Smartphone.

While Adobe and Apple had been wrangling about the decision to let or not let Flash on iPhone, Apple has finally relented and allowed Flash developers to craft iPhone applications using Flash Professional CS5. The forthcoming Flash Professional CS5 would allow developers to create interactive, rich, and visually appealing applications for iPhone and iPod Touch but nevertheless, they aren’t exactly Flash applications.

I guess it was high time iPhone users got to use Flash based apps and browse Flash rich content on their Smartphone. While Apple and Adobe continue to disagree about each others’ positions, Flash developers and iPhone users seem to have gained a lot more than could be imagined. While the biggies battle it out, you can express your support to Flash developers by getting yourself an Adobe Flash T-Shirt.

Sideboard beauty

Monday, September 28th, 2009 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

You can make a mistake and redeem it with some hacking. Adam’s “oops” turns out to be a sideboard with “oomph”.
“I am always looking for new ways to use things and Ikea is great for that. Especially when you make a mistake ordering a kitchen. I bought 2 tall wall units at 400mm wide instead of 500mm. Promptly bought and fitted the right size (to avoid the fury of the wife) and hid the 400mm ones in the garage while I thought of something to use them for.
When I was building an extension a couple of years later decided that if I turned them on there side and fitted them together they would be an ideal size as a sideboard unit in my sun room. Fitted them with a couple of shelves put a couple of Abstrakt doors to match the kitchen ones and oak worktop from Ikea to match the kitchen also. We always get comments on it and people have asked where I bought it from, and I tell them how I had it all planned this way from the beginning. Only my wife knows the real story! Or does she?
Image
I have also used the Ikea oak worktop every where in my house, for various different applications I have attached some pics as examples.”
