Complex Apartment in Oregon from Sienna Architects

Monday, February 22nd, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Today we would like to present some interesting apartment interiors that we think fall in the category of “complex” arrangements. That is because there ere many elements that needed to be combined and placed together in the same room. You are looking at a two-story high apartment from Portland, Oregon that was developed in a vintage building, respecting the construction’s main architecture lines. The project belongs to Sienna Architects, an architecture company from USA. It was built on a 2,200 square feet surface and the total costs were $2,035,000. Glass stairs connect the two floors and also give the place a contemporary and modern touch. Colorful elements (like the yellow armchairs and purple cushions) cheer up the room and become the focal point. Please let us know what you think.

TravSAFE Luggage Aint Nothin to Mess With

Monday, February 22nd, 2010 | Uncategorized | Comments Off

Alert the airplane police! They’re about to have a whole lot of confused airport burglars on their hands. This project by Shing Lo’s got the “Design Out Crime” tagline attached to it. Why? Because it’s a one-luggage thief deterrent, that’s why. It’s got a honeycomb interior. Locks. A passive alarm system. An active alarm system (that you can set off.)

And it looks so fashionable!

Active alarm system: should the thief who wants your bag get caught trying to rip the bag from your hands, just pull the trigger, breaking it off, and boom! Sparks shoot off and smoke pours from the package. Not only that, an audio alarm sounds loudly too! This thievery will not be private.

Passive alarm system: should the thief take your bag while you’re foolishly forgetting you even had it, have no fear! Unless the thief is lazy and decides to drag it across the floor that is, because this alarm activates when it senses it’s a certain distance away from the floor. This time no smoke though, only loud noises.

All this and a fabulously reinforced interior, honeycomb style.

Designer: Shing Lo

While CES 2010 shows some of the greatest and most innovative gadgets and technology, there are still cool toys that are more than worthy of a mention, such as this cool RC Gadget called the RCX Star Stryker.

Built to resemble a Luke Skywalker’s Star Fighter from Star Wars, this amazing RC Gadget put Remote Control Helicopters to shame. It has tremendous possibilities that combined with precision and control, grant a truly remarkable toy that flies, hovers and maneuvers like a true spacecraft.

We were fortunate enough to get a real video demonstration (seen above) from the maker, Patrick Le, who both explains the possibilities with the RCX4 Star Stryker and also demonstrates it with the sideways hovering, forward/backwards maneuvers, all around flying and of course the beautiful landing.

Unfortunately, the batteries last for only 10 minutes but also take only 10 minutes to recharge, so with a spare battery, you could easily be flying again while the first battery charges.

The RC star Stryker comes with a metal case that houses the entire spacecraft, remote control, separate wings, etc in a safe spot in foam that is cut for the specific gadget itself.

It may not be a true Star Wars Star Fighter replica, but with its features, abilities and looks…it really doesn’t matter, for it is an awesome Remote control gadget that is a touch of heaven. Just take a look at the video and be amazed yourself.

The specs are:

Sponge-Like “Swelling Glass” Absorbs Toxins in Water

Glass isn’t usually our first choice for cleaning up household messes, but a company called Absorbent Materials thinks that a new kind of “swelling glass” – glass that swells up like a sponge – could be the key to cleaning up contaminated groundwater. Dubbed Obsorb, the material absorbs volatile molecules in water like fuel oil and solvents without sucking up the water itself.

When we spotted this ingenious design by Ingrid Brandth, our unanimous chorus was, “I want one!” The Daily Shelter is an unassuming kitchen table that stealthily transforms into a playhouse or enclosed fort so kids and adults alike can seek shelter within its ‘walls’ to hide from scary sounds, ghosts, or family members. Looks like the perfect antidote for escaping unsavory meals or unwanted dinner guests. See the Daily Shelter in action via this video on Inhabitots!

Mona Lisa Represented Through Computer Folders

When Mona Lisa was painted a long time ago, she stirred a revolution in the world of art. She is known for her ethereal beauty and calm disposition that most painted characters do not have. Many art students have tried several times over to do a Mona Lisa recreation for their school projects, and the tradition has thus continued.

Here is a cool Mona Lisa design that has been created out of folders, instead of watercolour or oil paint. It is rather intriguing that the artist chose folders and the geek medium to create Mona Lisa, who seems to be just as beautiful in this recreation too. However, she does look a little blurred out, and it reminds me of impressionist paintings.

Perhaps this is to say the Mona Lisa is just like anyone else in the world, and her beauty too fades away with time just like any mortal’s does. Whatever the message might be, this is one of the best contemporary geek art that I have come across. You could also take a look at Mona Lisa Painting which was surprisingly made from the grease present in burgers.
